Security officials discuss defense cooperation opportunities as UK expands presence in Indo-Pacific

March 8, 2024 (Quezon City) - DND Senior Undersecretary Irineo C. Espino received Her Excellency Dame Sarah MacIntosh DCMG, the United Kingdom (UK)'s Deputy National Security Adviser (DNSA) for International Affairs, during the latter's courtesy call at the Department of National Defense.

The discussions focused on shared security challenges, particularly the West Philippine Sea issue. Undersecretary Espino emphasized the DND's commitment to defending Philippine sovereignty through actions like challenging infringements and deploying naval and coast guard assets. He highlighted how these efforts align with the department's Comprehensive Archipelagic Defense Concept (CADC).

Ms. Macintosh underscored the UK's commitment to strengthening defense relations with the Philippines. She noted the increased presence of UK vessels and personnel in the Indo-Pacific, along with various joint exercises, as actions that demonstrate the UK's commitment under the "Deter, Defend, and Compete" pillar of its 2023 Integrated Review Refresh national security strategy.

Accompanying Ms. MacIntosh were His Majesty's Ambassador (HMA) to the Philippines Laure Beaufils, British Defence Attaché to the Philippines Group Captain Bea Walcot, and the UK DNSA's Private Secretaries, Dr. Shachi Dilip Amdekar and Ms. Katy Elizabeth Rae.
