UNCMAC senior member visits DND, reaffirms PH-ROK cooperation

April 30, 2024 (Quezon City) - Department of National Defense (DND) Undersecretary for Capability Assessment and Development Angelito M. De Leon and United Nations Command Military Armistice Commission (UNCMAC) Senior Member Major General Kang In Kyu, ROKA, reaffirmed the strong defense partnership between the Philippines and Republic of Korea (ROK) during the latter’s courtesy call at the DND on Tuesday.

Both sides emphasized the two countries' long history of cooperation, notably during the Korean War. Usec. De Leon added that the Philippines is grateful for the enduring respect given to the Filipino veterans of the Korean War.

The defense official also expressed his appreciation for South Korea's continued support for the Armed Forces of the Philippines' Modernization Program.

Discussions on regional concerns focused on shared security challenges experienced by both countries. Major General Kang reassured the Philippines of South Korea's commitment to maintaining regional stability. He further shared that while both countries face factors that attempt to create instability in the region, the historic camaraderie between South Korea and the Philippines continues to endure.

Major General Kang also expressed his gratitude for the Philippines' active participation in the work of the United Nations Command.

Usec. De Leon welcomed the official’s assurances of continued support and reaffirmed the Philippines' commitment to continue serving as a responsible actor in efforts to sustain peace and stability in Asia.
